Internship Training Programme of the Department


Interns shall acquire skills to deal effectively with an individual and the community in the context of primary health care. This is to be achieved by hands on experience at the Urban Health and Training Centre and Rural Health and Training Centre. The interns will be trained to effectively function as primary healthcare physicians and use the essential drugs (the WHO concept of P drugs) rationally. Besides clinical skill, in evaluation of patient and initiation of primary care, an Intern shall:-

1.effectively participate with other members of the health team with qualities of leadership.
2. make a community diagnosis in specific situations such as epidemics and institute relevant control measures for communicable diseases.
3. develop capability for analysis of hospital based morbidity and mortality statistics.
4. use essential drugs in the community with the awareness of availability, cost and side effects.
5. Provide health education to an individual/community on :
--a) tuberculosis HIV/AIDS, vector borne diseases etc.
--b) hazards of smoking, alcoholism and substance abuse.
--c) small family, spacing of pregnancy, use of appropriate contraceptives
--d) applied nutrition and care of mothers and children
--e) immunization
--f) health problems of adolescents and school health programmes.
6.initiate or participate in family composite health care (birth to death)
7. participation in all of the modules on field practice for community health e.g. safe motherhood, nutrition surveillance and rehabilitation, diarrhea etc.
8. acquire proficiency for Family Welfare Programmes (ante natal care, normal delivery, contraception, post natal care etc.).
Duration of internship: –
Two months
a. One month at Urban Health and Training Centre, Multannagar
b. One month at Rural Health and Training Centre, Khajoori
Postgraduate training programme of the department: –
First batch of postgraduates are being trained to be able to:

•Function as public health specialists in the context of national programmes as well as other public health problems prevalent in country by local area
•Function as primary care /family physicians in diagnosing and treating common health problems including preventive and rehabilitative care
•Function as researchers in conducting community and hospital based research of high quality
•Function as teachers of public health speciality and impart top quality training to under graduates and other students.
Training includes: –
•Regular seminars and journal clubs
•Regular field visits with undergraduate students
•Residential postings at RHTC/UHTC
•Short postings at various clinical departments
•Group discussions and classes with faculty members
•Attending national and international conferences, workshops etc.
•Visiting national institutes related to public health like NIHFW, NICD, NIN etc.
•Regular assessment and feedback of their performance
